PRHS wins big at the National History Bowl
(Washington, DC – April 29, 2013)

Do you know what U.S. president signed the Clayton Anti-Trust Act into law? (Woodrow Wilson) Or what West African empire was once ruled by Mansa Musa? (Mali) Such questions are little April 29th, 2013challenge for the more than one thousand high school students from across the United States who converged in Washington for a weekend full of fun and exciting history competition. This year’s annual National History Bee and Bowl National Championship featured 198 teams and over 800 students from all across the USA and as far away as Guam and international schools from London and Tokyo.

Plymouth Regional High School sent a team of five students from our district to the national event this year.  After many grueling rounds of the all day competition, Jordan Brownstein, Kate Brownstein, Jade McLaughlin, Aaron Scheinman and Steve Cole ended the tournament with a 12-2 record, advancing to the quarterfinal playoffs, and emerged as the History Bowl National Small School Champions.  Jordan Brownstein also competed in the National History Bee head-to-head play, finishing in the top 12 of 175 varsity competitors in the semi-finals.

The top students from regional events advance to Washington for the National Championship every April to win trophies, prizes, and of course, bragging rights. Over the course of the weekend, students compete both with their school in “bowl” events (pitting teams of four students against each other) and individually in “bee” events (pitting students against each other in head-to-head competition).

While the competition crowns a champion, the real goal of the weekend is to celebrate history. According to NHBB Executive Director David Madden, “We want to recognize and reward students for their love of history.” Students seem to be getting the message: said Brian Owen, a high school senior from Spartanburg, SC, “There’s nothing more exciting than spending the weekend with students who share my love of history.”

The competition was April 26-28 at the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Arlington, VA and seven host sites throughout Washington, DC including the Smithsonian Institution, Anderson House, the Phillips Collection, and the Kosciuszko Foundation.

Congratulations!

Andrew Buttolph Recognized
for Volunteer Service

Rumney, NH – Andrew Buttolph, 17, of Rumney has been honored for his exemplary volunteer service with a President’s Volunteer Service Award.

The award, which recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country, was presented by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program on behalf of President Barack Obama. Andrew participated in the Spirit of Community program this year as a representative of Plymouth Regional High School, where he is a student.

Andrew earned his award by volunteering his time to a leadership training program in Concord, NH.  This program focuses on the skills and values necessary to teach young individuals presentation skills.

Sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program recognizes young people across America for outstanding community service activities.  More than 370,000 young people across America have been considered for these awards since the program began in 1995.

“The recipients of these awards vividly demonstrate that young people across America are making remarkable contributions to the health and vitality of their communities,” said John R. Strangfeld, chairman and CEO of Prudential Financial.  “In recognizing these students and placing a spotlight on their volunteer service activities, we hope to motivate others to consider how they can also contribute to their community.”
